An-2 Сolt
|
The Antonov An-2, sometimes referred to as the worlds largest biplane, was designed as a multipurpose utility aircraft. During the Sovjet aera, it was very commonly used as crop dusting plane spraying chemicals and fertilizer on agricultural lands. A number of An-2 airplanes also served as airliners in more remote parts of the USSR. Some Antonov An-2 are also known to feature a VIP interior of 6 to 8 seats. The An-2 was produced in large numbers, with estimates reaching the figure of 15’000 aircraft built. From 1956 onwards, the main production site was with PZL in Poland. Also China produced the An-2 using the designation Y-5. Under the designation An-3, Antonov is currently proposing a program to upgrade existing An-2 with a turboprop engine. Today, many An-2 are no longer in use. Especially on secondary airports, long lines of now defunct Antonov 2 crop dusters park. The An-2 is still widely used by the paramilitary DOSAAF to train parachutists. |
